Accessibility
A number of features are built into our web site to help our visitors with accessibility.
In technical language, all pages on this site should be valid to Hyper Text Mark-up Language (HTML) 4.01 Transitional and use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
Maintaining an accessible site is an ongoing process and we are working hard to offer a user friendly experience. However, if you have any problems using this web site please contact us by email.
- Text and colours have generally high contrast to make text more recognisable.
- The size of text can be changed as follows (typical procedures for Microsoft Internet Explorer):
Method 1: Change the type size using the browser Menu
Click the View menu and select Text Size. You can then choose Larger or Smaller text to suit:

Method 2: Text Size Button on your web browser
You can customise your toolbar to add an Icon for Font Size. Right-click over the button bar and choose Customise... to add the Font Size button to your toolbar. Then click the button to access the Font Size selection:

The Tab Key on your keyboard can be used to navigate between buttons and links.
You can use our Site Map button to see a 'tree' view of our web site. Tab through to the Expand All link and click Enter to open the tree, then tab to the page you want to see. The dotted outline highlights your current cursor position — Press Enter on your keyboard.
Using Access Keys:
The DAAT website features “access keys”. These are shortcuts which allow you to get to certain parts of a web site quickly. They help you if you have difficulties using a mouse or prefer to use shortcuts.
We have used the UK government access key standard on the most commonly used links and help features as listed below:
- 0 - accessibility
- 1 - home page
- 3 - site map
- 9 - contact us
How you use the access keys depends on whether you have a PC or an Apple Mac, and also on which browser you have. See below for typical procedures for Microsoft Internet Explorer:
PC, Internet Explorer 5+:
- Press and hold down the ALT key.
- Then press the number or letter (see the access keys as listed above) and press Enter/Return key
It is also possible to remove or override the effects of the style sheet used to control the display and layout of this site.
In Internet Explorer (version 6) select Tools from the menu bar, then Internet options, then Accessibility and, finally, select how you want to handle our style sheets and any which you may created for your own use.
Opera (version 6) offers many features for controlling accessibility. These may be accessed by selecting File on the menu bar, then Preferences and then working with either the Accessibility options, the Fonts and colors options, the Page style options or the Multimedia options or any combination of these.
Help with Adobe PDF Documents
Some downloadable documents are available as "PDF" files. This stands for "Portable Document Format" and ensures that the page you see on your screen or print off looks the same as we intended — no matter what type of computer or printer you use. You'll see a special icon like this:
Adobe PDF document
You can save the documents to your hard disk for future reference. To read a PDF file, you need the free Adobe Reader software which can be downloaded from Adobe's web site. Adobe Reader has a number of features to help with accessibility.
